STAR Reporting & Academic Levels of Achievement

Levels of Achievement

Students in Kindergarten through grade 6 are evaluated using outcomes-based reporting and the levels of achievement scale. This updated achievement scale supports live reporting practices and aligns with provincial assessment scales. It will be used to communicate how your child will progress through their learning throughout the school year. In most cases, students will start at the beginning level, then they will progress through the school year until they are proficient and, with even more practice, possibly excelling.

Purpose Statement: STAR Division (Grades 1-6)  Report Card

Student assessment and evaluation are integral components of teaching and learning. The primary purpose of a progress and/or report card is to provide a snapshot of student learning at a moment in time and to communicate feedback to parents about their child’s learning journey, achievement, strengths and challenges. This report is not a final evaluation. Students will continue to learn and grow in each of the levels reported. In an outcomes-based report card, reporting is done in each subject using key learner outcomes that mirror the provincial curriculum. The outcomes describe specifically what students are expected to know and be able to do. Outcomes-based reporting allows parents to understand more clearly what is expected of students and their progress towards meeting these expectations.

Purpose Statement: STAR Division (Grades 7-12)  Report Card

Student assessment and evaluation are integral components of teaching and learning. The primary purpose of a progress and/or report card is to provide a snapshot of student learning at a moment in time and to communicate feedback to parents about their child’s progress, achievement, strengths and challenges.  This report is not a final evaluation.  Students will continue to learn and grow in each of the courses reported.

Progress Report

Progress Reports provide brief snapshots in time of their child’s learning in relation to the curriculum coved up to that date. These progress reports are meant to be springboards for discussion between parents, teachers and students that can take place during parent teacher interviews or at times scheduled between you and your child’s teacher. As the learning journey continues so will communication about how your child's progress with their learning. The achievement reported in that first progress report will be built on as the course and school year continue. It is the goal of STAR Catholic teachers to improve your child’s learning and these progress reports provide short snap shots of what your child is learning in relation to the Alberta Education Curriculum.

Report Card

The report cards in January and June are more detailed reports that will show more progress with the final summative report being the June Report Card. Though some courses, particularly in high school, end in January as courses are semestered. All reports can be accessed online in the PowerSchool Parent Portal or by contacting your school for paper copies upon request.
